Gilbert & George
In their own words, Gilbert & George (b. 1943 and 1942) are two people, but one artist. They met while studying sculpture at St. Martin’s School of Art in London in 1967, and quickly realized their most interesting artworks were actually themselves. After their first collaboration as “living sculptures,” they spent the rest of their careers turning life into art, bringing art to life, and calling all of it sculpture (postal sculptures, video sculptures, charcoal on paper sculptures). With a commitment to “art for all,” Gilbert & George’s work speaks to the wide spectrum of human experiences—from the hidden to the quotidian.
