Lee Maxey
Raised in Arkansas in a deeply religious family, Lee Maxey’s queer identity informs how she approaches spirituality and its impacts. Her carefully composed images carry the color palette and geometric precision of Ellsworth Kelly's work. In many of her paintings, she presents familiar objects or Biblical stories in unexpected arrangements. She often renders these characters in bright, overblown shapes that depart from traditional religious paintings, though her use of the ancient medium of egg tempera connects her to that long history of storytelling.
